Niagara-on-the-Lake Passes 2021 Budget

Niagara-on-the-Lake council has passed the 2021 budget.

Taxpayers will see a 2.12 percent increase.

This means that for the average homeowner with an assessment of $533,482, there will be an increase of about $29.67 on their tax bill.

A storm levy of $456,998 was also approved, which is a 4.5 percent increase from last year.

This will result in urban customers paying an extra $3.25 on their tax bill in addition to the $29.67.

Lord Mayor Betty Disero says that the original draft budget had a high levy increase, but council was able to bring it down after ways to save were found.

"The original draft budget began with a proposed 7.68% levy increase. Council requested that Town Staff and the Audit & Finance Committee look for savings and bring down the proposed increase to 3%."

Council also approved the creation of a Heritage Tax Rebate Program.

This program will help property owners maintain and restore their properties for the future.
