Niagara Not Mandating Vaccinations For Youth Under 18 Participating in Indoor Sports

Niagara is not mandating vaccinations for youth under 18 to play indoor sports, but discussions on vaccine requirements continue.

Niagara currently has no plans to require youth under 18 to be double jabbed in order to play indoor sports.

Several of Ontario's health units, including York Region and Windsor-Essex County, are now requiring anyone 12 and older to be fully vaccinated in order to play sports inside arenas.

Niagara's Acting Medical Officer of Health Dr. Mustafa Hirji tells us while officials are monitoring the role youth athletics is playing in spreading infections, particularly within schools, no decision has been made yet on whether or not to follow suit.

He also notes public health officials are speaking with stakeholders, and additional vaccine certification requirements are being considered.

"Public Health is closely monitoring the role youth athletics is playing in spreading infections and their subsequent impact on schools. Additional local vaccine certification requirements are being actively considered and discussed with stakeholders as a way to keep schools safe and allow students to continue with interrupted learning. However, no decision has been made at this time of whether to proceed."
