Three MPPs asking Labour Minister Monte McNaughton to expedite investigation into deaths at National Steel Car in Hamilton.

Several MPPs have written a letter to Labour Minister Monte McNaughton, demanding an expedited investigation into deaths at a Hamilton railroad manufacturer.

St. Catharines MPP Jennie Stevens, Niagara Falls MPP Wayne Gates and Hamilton-Centre MPP Andrea Horwath say the Ministry of Labour should take action to protect workers from on-the-job fatalities at the business.

Earlier this month, a worker died following an on-site industrial accident.

This is the third work-related death at the facility since September 2020.

"It is time for concrete and meaningful action," the letter reads. "Workplaces that fail to protect workers should not be able to continually operate without consequences. When a worker leaves home for work, they and their family should not need to worry about whether they will be returning home safely from their shift."

The MPPs are also asking McNaughton to meet with workers and union representatives, as well as recommend the federal government enforce the Westray Law in this case.

The law allows courts to attribute criminal liability to organizations, their representatives and anyone who directs the work of others in cases involving death or serious injury.
