Niagara Health Among Southern Ontario Hospitals Forced to Transfer Critical Care Patients

This comes as provinces clears the way for non urgent procedures to resume at hospitals tomorrow

Although the province has cleared the way for non urgent procedures to resume tomorrow at hospitals, hospitals that fall under the Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant Burlington Region are still being forced to transfer critical care patients to out of region hospitals.

In a released, HNHBB says pressures on its critical care capacity have worsened over the last week.

As a result, it says "these pressures are threatening hospitals' capacity for time sensitive surgeries and procedures and access to critical care through our emergency departments and regional specialty programs."

The HNHBB says "to ensure critical care capacity in the region for patients who require it, hospitals have decided to move some critical care patients to other hospitals outside of the region."

Niagara Health is still facing staff shortages due to COVID and continues to keep the Fort Erie Urgent Care Centre closed so its doctors and nurses can work in emergency departments and care for critically ill patients.
