Niagara Falls Reaches Waste Collection Compromise with Region

The City of Niagara Falls is no longer looking to break off on it's own, when it comes to garbage collection.

Mayor Jim Diodati says it was going to be an ugly legal mess.

"We met with our legal teams and we knew that for this to be effective they were going to have to dig in, and that was never our goal. Our goal is to give the best service at the best price for our residents."

Diodati tabled motion as a compromise at today's Public Works Committee meeting.

It includes having the Region hire a third party consultant look into the current waste management practices.

Diodati says they're going to look into ways to create more efficiencies, which could include switching from dual stream to single stream.

"A lot of people don't exactly know where the egg carton goes or where the milk carton goes. They regularly throw them in wrong container and those things all go to the landfill. When you go with single stream; everything gets sorted."

Diodati's motion also includes three other parts.

Region will work with the newly awarded waste management companies, to try to implement the consultants recommendations.

It's also going to create plans to address illegal dumping and public health concerns, once we switch to every-other-week garbage collection this fall.
