We spoke to Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati, who says he's worried the loosening of border restrictions doesn't go far enough to help local businesses.
Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati says he's concerned local businesses will suffer after the federal government announced on Friday that it is loosening testing requirements for Canadians returning from short trips.
Effective November 30th, fully vaccinated Canadians returning home from international trips that are 72 hours or less won't need to show a negative COVID-19 test at air or land borders.
However, tests will still be required for foreigners coming to Canada, as well as anyone taking a trip over 72 hours.
Diodati says while the move is good news for people living along the border, there is a potential negative impact on businesses.
"Canadians will be allowed to cross the border, shop at the Galleria and the places they like to frequent on the U.S. side, but the Americans who are dying to spend their money here won't be reciprocating, with the ongoing rules and regulations.
He also says the federal government should be seeking more input from border communities when making decisions regarding border restrictions.
