Niagara Falls Doctor Shines a Light on Billing Issue for Virtual Appointments

A Niagara Falls respirologist says something needs to be done.

Dr. Neil Maharj has shut down his office and his laboratory due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

He has been offering virtual appointments for essential visits as an alternative.

The province issued new billing codes to pay doctors for online appointments, but there is a glitch.

The Ontario Medical Association says the government’s computer system has not been updated and it’s not expecting doctors to be paid for these services until June.

The province is expecting payments to be made next month.

The OMA says we could be heading towards a primary care crisis if something isn’t done about this.

Health Minister Christine Elliott acknowledged the situation during a press conference on Friday.

She says the province is working with the OMA to find a solution.
