Niagara Employment Rate Rises in May

The Niagara Workforce Planning Board is confirming a decline in the local unemployment rate.

Last month, Niagara's unemployment rate hit 11.3 percent, down from 12.5 percent from the previous month. 

The region had 3,900 more people working than in April, with 5,700 more people employed full-time, and 2,000 fewer part-time jobs. 

In addition, Niagara's employment rate grew from 50.1 percent to 51.2 percent, and 1,800 more local youth were employed. 

May 2021 also saw 2,200 more women employed, and 1,500 more men in employment. 

Across the country, the employment rate decreased 0.4 percent, with most of the decline being in part-time jobs.
