Public Relations student wins Canadian Public Relations Society/Cision Student Award of Excellence.

A Niagara College graduate is receiving some national recognition.

Nicolas Mertens, who graduated from the school's Public Relations program earlier this year, is the 2021 winner of the Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS)/Cision Student Award of Excellence.

The award celebrates up and comers in the industry who have shown an ability and passion for the profession.

Since graduating, the Hamilton, Ontario resident has worked as a social media account manager for Zak Communications, a modern life style communications company that has locations in Montreal and Toronto.

“I’ve never been the ‘top student’ in anything, anywhere before. Being recognized with such an honour is reassuring that I am on the right path,” said Mertens. “I am so proud to represent both Niagara College Public Relations and Zak Communications in the national spotlight. I think it shows the College and agency are modern, quick to adapt and hubs for innovative, creative ideas. And that’s what PR is all about.”

Mertens will get a $1,000 prize and a one-year Emerging Professional membership to the CPRS.
