New Report Calls for Changes Following Deaths of Migrant Workers

A recent report is calling for increased protections for migrant workers in Ontario.

The review was conducted by the deputy chief coroner in response to COVID-19 deaths of three migrant farm workers in the province last year.

The report claims foreigners working on farms in Ontario have a higher chance of contracting COVID-19 due to communal living and working conditions.

Thirty-five recommendations are being made, including the creation of a phone line to allow workers to report concerns or workplace violations in several languages.

It also pushes for random testing of migrant workers and isolation centres to be set up in communities with a high amount of migrant workers, in order to deal with outbreaks that may occur.
