New Police Powers Walked Back

Ford government backtracks on giving police power to conduct random stops

The Ford government confirming it is walking back a move allowing police to randomly stop motorists or individuals to ask where they are going or request their home address.

In a release, Solicitor General Sylvia Jones says instead police will be allowed to stop people who they have reason to believe are participating in an organized event or social gathering.

The reversal comes after several police forces including Niagara and Hamilton said their officers would not conduct the random stops.
