Mystic Aquarium Reports Death of Second Beluga Whale

Whale was transferred from Marineland to Connecticut aquarium in May 2021

On its website, Mystic Aquarium says the death of the female whale came despite receiving 24/7 intensive care over the past several months for multiple health issues.

The aquarium says they provided "round-the-clock medical treatment, testing, and 24-hour monitoring."

This is the second of five whales moved from Marineland to die at the U.S. facility.

In August of last year the aquarium reported a beluga whale from Marineland died from "a disease in its intestine that prevented it from processing nutrients."

The cause of death for the second beluga will not be known until a full necropsy is completed.

Aquarium officials say they have six other whales under their care and one of the animals remains in the intensive care unit, while the other five are healthy and residing in the Arctic Coast habitat.

There is no confirmation if the third whale in the ICU is another one of the whales the aquarium received from Marineland.
