MPP Stevens Urging Province to Invest in Non-Profit Homes

Stevens says while families need more long-term care beds, the province should build more beds in non-profit homes.

St. Catharines MPP Jennie Stevens is calling for investments in public and non-profit long term care homes.

Yesterday, Niagara West MPP Sam Oosterhoff and Long Term Care Minister Paul Calandra announced 329 new long term care beds to five homes in Niagara.

Stevens says while the additional beds are welcome, they shouldn't be put into for-profit nursing homes.

"Families in St. Catharines need more long-term beds for their loved ones, but they want the homes to put care first, not shareholder profits. While additional beds in St. Catharines are welcome, now is the time to build those beds in public and non-profit homes - not shovel more money into for-profit nursing homes that did so much damage during the pandemic."

Stevens is particularly concerned about plans for Garden City Manor, which she says is one of the homes that had "awful records" during the pandemic.

Less than a month ago, Garden City Manor workers began picketing over issues surrounding payroll and poor treatment.
