MP Baldinelli Says Wine Industry Not Receiving Enough Support From the Federal Government

Conservative MP Baldinelli addressed Question Period yesterday, saying more needs to be done to support the country's wine industry.

Niagara Falls MP Tony Baldinelli says the federal government needs to provide more support to the country's wine industry.

During Question Period yesterday, Baldinelli noted last year's budget dedicated $101 million in federal support over two years to the industry, after the wine excise exemption has been repealed, which takes effect this Canada Day.

He also says Budget 2022 is forecasting $135 million in revenue for the industry over the first two years after the exemption is repealed.

"Where is that extra $34 million in forecasted revenue going?" Baldinelli asked. "Will it be given back to the wine industry to support their needs?"

Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland responded, noting that the federal government has pledged $100 million to help wineries adapt to ongoing and emerging challenges, and applications to the program will be accepted starting this summer.
