Metrolinx Workers Vote in Favour of Strike Deadline

Some Metrolinx workers could hit picket lines on October 31st.

If you use Go Transit, you may soon need to find another way to get around.

The union representing Metrolinx's GO Transit bus drivers and other workers says members have voted in favour of an October 31st strike deadline.

According to Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1587, about 93 percent of its members voted in favour of setting a strike deadline if a deal isn't made with their employer.

The union represents GO Transit bus operators, station attendants, office workers, transit safety officers, and plant and fleet maintenance workers.

President Rob Cormier says the biggest issues for workers include job security and job safety regarding hiring contract workers from other companies.

Negotiations between Metrolinx and the union kicked off in April.

Since June 1st, members have been working without a contract.

Metrolinx has released the following statement in regards to the situation.

"Metrolinx continues to negotiate with the ATU in good faith. A strike is unnecessary and avoidable. Negotiations are ongoing and we will remain at the table to reach an agreement that includes the 67 improvements we have already agreed to. Should a labour disruption occur, Metrolinx has a plan in place to ensure the continuity of services for our customers. To be clear, GO Train service would continue in this event."
