Mediation Between Province and CUPE Ends with No Deal

Education workers poised to walk off the job tomorrow.

Mediation between the province and the Canadian Union of Public Employees has ended, with no deal being reached.

This comes as the province is expected to pass legislation to impose a contract on education workers and outlaw a strike that is planned for tomorrow.

The bill is expected to pass later today.

CUPE says even if the legislation passes, 55,000 workers including custodial staff and early childhood educators will walk off the job tomorrow until further notice.

Several school boards, including the DSBN and Niagara Catholic, say schools will be shut down tomorrow in the event of a strike.

Meanwhile, the Ministry is urging boards to take action to keep schools open or transition to remote learning if the strike extends past tomorrow.
