Man Charged After Dog Bites Police Officer

A man from Welland has been charged after his bull mastiff bit a police officer.

Just after 8:20 last night, the officer was investigating a minor collision in the area of Thorold Road and First Avenue.

The tan-coloured bull mastiff and his owners were inside one of the vehicles.

While the officer was speaking to the drivers, the owner and the dog exited the vehicle.

The dog got loose and latched onto the officer's left wrist.

The officer was treated for minor injuries in hospital.

Niagara SPCA Animal Services laid charges against the owner, and issued two fines totaling $660.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to call police at 905-688-4111, ext. 1002200.
