Liberals Abolish Controversial Amendment to Gun Legislation

Federal government getting rid of gun legislation amendments that would have banned a number of firearms used by hunters

The Liberal government is scrapping controversial amendments to pending gun legislation.

The amendments would have added many popular hunting rifles and shotguns to a list of prohibited firearms in Canada, as part of a push to ban "assault-style" weapons.

Had it been passed, the guns would have been banned under the Criminal Code instead of through legislation, which would have made it more difficult for future governments to change.

Critics said the move would do little to make Canadians safer when many guns used for crime are handguns illegally smuggled in from the US.

Some firearm owners also say the amendments unfairly targeted farmers and hunters.

The government is also getting rid of clauses that would have banned any rifle or shotgun that could potentially accept a magazine with more than five rounds.

The federal government also intended to ban guns used by many hunters, including ones with a muzzle wider than 20 millimetres, and long guns than generate over 10,000 joules of energy.

Bill C-21 was introduced in May, in hopes of limiting firearm access for anyone considered dangerous to themselves or others, as well as expand other measures impacting the regulated ban on handguns.
