Holiday Fire Prevention Tips from the Niagara Falls Fire Department

The Niagara Falls Fire Department has a few tips for homeowners, to make sure everyone has a safe and happy holiday season.

If you're planning on cooking a Christmas dinner or baking a some cookies for Santa Claus, Chief Fire Prevention Officer Ben Trendle says you should stay in the kitchen.

"Cooking is the leading cause of residential fires and especially during the holidays when we have lots of entertaining going on, we want people to stay in the kitchen while they're cooking."

Trendle says you also shouldn't be drinking alcohol in the kitchen.

"Alcohol and fire are a dangerous mix. So make sure before you get into cooking the meals or lighting the candles, that you haven't overindulged any alcohol."

Trendle says it's also a good idea to check your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, before inviting friends over this holiday season.
