Ground Breaking Ceremony Kicks Starts Construction on New Grimsby Hospital

The project carries a $224 million price tag

The shovels are in the ground and construction has started on the new West Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Grimsby.

A weekend ceremony with local and provincial dignitaries marked the beginning of what has already been a long journey for the hospital rebuild.

The hospital which was built in 1946, faced closure in the 1990's, by the cost cutting Mike Harris’ Conservative government.

But Harris backed down after a huge outpouring of support.

In 2012, despite a massive local fundraising effort, the Liberal government scrapped a planned rebuild they had committed to seven years earlier.

In a release Premier Doug Ford says "After decades of inaction by previous governments, our government is getting it done for the people of West Niagara."
