Gates Slams Ford Government's Long Term Care Plan

Gates says plan is "cruel."

Niagara Falls MPP Wayne Gates is criticizing the Ford government's "More Beds, Better Care Act."

If passed, the legislation would allow hospitals to transfer patients to long term care homes without their consent in cases where a clinician says the patient needs "an alternate level of care."

Gates says the proposed legislation undermines consent and puts pressure on seniors to move when and where they don't want to.

"Their new bill gives them the power to send patients’ personal information to a private care home without their consent, to discharge them from the hospital, and to pack them up and send them to a long-term care bed far from home, even if they don’t want to go," Gates said during Question Period today. "Informed consent is a cornerstone of modern medicine and health care - this scheme undermines that right."

Meanwhile, Long Term Care Minister Paul Calandra has previously said if the bill is passed, no one will be forced to move.
