MPP Wayne Gates is calling out a Niagara Falls landlord for imposing a 10 percent rent increase.
He says an increase to this extent is bad enough and the fact that the landlord of Summerset Court apartments is demanding it right in the middle of a pandemic is downright despicable.
He says they should be ashamed of their actions and apologize to their residents.
Gates issued his statement after the landlord sent a letter to tenants.
His statement reads as follows;
“Like so many Niagarans, the tenants of this apartment building are dealing with the stress of keeping their families healthy, struggling to pay bills and worrying about their jobs.
The idea that any landlord would impose a 10 per cent rent hike overnight and then every year is shocking, but the fact that this landlord of Summerset Court Apartments demanded this right in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic is downright despicable.
Our community has come together like never before during this pandemic, we've cared for each other and showed compassion. The actions of the owners of the Summerset Court Apartments are appalling and they should be ashamed of their actions. This should be reversed immediately with an apology to the residents who have been subjected to this unacceptable treatment.”
