Ford Calls to Shut Down Pearson and Implement Hotel Quarantine at Land Borders

The Premier made his first public appearance this week, calling for tougher restrictions at the border.

ONTARIO - The Premier of Ontario made his first public appearance this week.

Ford says he welcomes the inquest into Long Term Care Homes in Ontario. Ford says he commissioned this report himself. Ontario's Long-Term Care COVID-19 Commission final report is expected to come out later this afternoon.

"What happened in our long term care homes, it was tragic and it was terrible and most of all, it can never be allowed to happen again. That is why I personally commissioned this report."

Ford says he could point to the previous Governments who didn't properly fund Long Term Care Homes.

"But none of that matters because I am your Premier today and I don't want them to look back in 20 years and say that we could have done more."

Ford also called for tougher restrictions at our land and air borders. He says we need to shut down the airports now.

"I assure you, if I had the power, I would close down Pearson airport immediately, I would shut down the land borders to only those who are absolutely essential. I would do everything in my power to stop a vaccine resistant variant from coming into our country and bringing a fourth wave with it."

Ford says he pleaded with the Prime Minister to do more at our borders.

"To tighten the airports, bring in mandatory pre-departure testing for those flying into Ontario from other Provinces and most importantly to close the loopholes at our land border with the United States by bringing in a mandatory hotel quarantine for those major land crossings."

He says people are flying into Buffalo and then taking a taxi into Canada to avoid quarantine. You can listen to his full remarks below:
