Health Minister Christine Elliott says Niagara's Acting Medical Officer of Health is working to protect the people of Niagara.

She defended Dr. Mustafa Hirji during yesterday's press conference with Premier Doug Ford.

Dr. Hirji has faced backlash after imposing new restaurant restrictions that limit dining to only members of the same household or essential caregivers.

Elliott says Dr. Hirji is doing his job.

"I really hope that people will take these measures very seriously and not harass the Medical Officer of Health but follow his direction because he's only trying to keep people safe and try to bend the curve downwards."

Ford says it's ridiculous that Dr. Hirji is being harassed because he's working hard to protect the Region.

"Would you be harassing your own doctor if he said you should follow these protocols?"

Ford also stated that he's also tired of people not following the rules.

"We're at a critical stage and I'm at my brink just to say enough so be prepared on Friday, then we can look at each other and say why are we in this position."
