UPDATED: Fifty-One New COVID-19 Cases in Niagara

Niagara Public Health is reporting 51 new cases of COVID-19 today.

The death toll remains steady at 373.

Six people are battling the virus in local hospitals.

There are four confirmed cases of the variant that originated in the UK, with an additional 114 cases under investigation for variants.

Throughout Niagara, there are 278 active cases and 24 active outbreaks.

There are 57 active cases in Niagara Falls, and 52 each in St. Catharines and Thorold.

The province has announced 1074 new cases of COVID-19 and 11 new deaths today.

There are 313 new cases in Toronto, 199 in Peel and 101 in York Region.

In response to today's spike in new cases, Niagara's top doctor Mustafa Hirji has released the following statement.

The increase in cases today does not have any particular cause; there is no focal event that has led to a large number of cases. One day of higher cases (or lower cases) should generally not attract much attention since one-off variations are possible.

Over the past 3 weeks we have been seeing rising cases in Niagara as well as most of Ontario. The Ontario Science Table briefed the public last Thursday that sharp increases in cases are likely in coming week due to the variants of concern growing across the province and the degree of reopening that has taken place in the province. A high case count becomes more likely when we are headed towards a larger increase.

In order to avoid a third wave and third lockdown, we need to double down on staying home as much as possible, and venturing out only for truly essential reasons. When we are out, we must be rigorous keeping 2 metres distance from others, wearing our face coverings, and always washing our hands.
