Tourism businesses to receive up to $20,000

The federal government is providing assistance to struggling tourism businesses in Niagara.

Today, Niagara Centre MP Vance Badawey announced a $2 million investment from FedDev Ontario for the Regional Municipality of Niagara.

The announcement was made on behalf of Melanie Joly, Minister of Economic Development and Official Languages.

She's also the Minister responsible for FedDev Ontario.

The municipality will provide tourism-dependent businesses with up to $20,000 to cover costs associated with adapting and re-opening, including buying equipment and renovating space.

The funds are being delivered in partnership with several municipalities comprising part of Niagara's Economic Rapid Response Team: Pelham, St. Catharines, Port Colborne, Fort Erie, Grimsby, Niagara Falls, Wainfleet, Welland, Thorold, Lincoln and West Lincoln.

Badawey says it's important for the government to provide support to small businesses during these trying times.

"Small businesses make enormous contributions to their communities, which is why it's important we continue to support them as part of our economic recovery."

The project will provide support to over 150 establishments and maintain nearly 325 jobs.

Businesses receiving help include the Thorold Community Theatre and White Meadows Farms in St. Catharines.
