Niagara District Airport is getting over $1 million from the federal government.

Transportation Minister Omar Alghabra was joined by St. Catharines MP Chris Bittle and Niagara Centre MP Vance Badawey for today's announcement.

Through Transport Canada's Airports Capital Assistance Program, the federal government is investing $1.2 million to purchase safety equipment including a snow plow, a loader and a runway sweeper.

This is in addition to the $470,000 the airport received last May from the Airports Capital Assistance Program, which was used for the purchase of a medium-sized snow blower.

The equipment will help keep airport surfaces such as runways and taxiways clear of snow and ice.

"The pandemic highlighted the important role Canada's local and regional airports play in our country's economy, and in sustaining the social and economic well-being of our communities," Alghabra noted. "In addition to supporting personal travel, local and regional airports are key connectors for business, health care, social services, and emerging resource development sectors. These investments will improve access to safe, reliable and efficient air transportation options, and will help us deliver our commitment to build safer, healthier and stronger communities as Canada recovers from the pandemic."
