Local projects will receive over $4.4 million

Infrastructure projects in Niagara are getting some help from the provincial and federal governments.

Earlier today, St. Catharines MP Chris Bittle, Niagara West MPP Sam Oosterhoff, and St. Catharines Mayor Walter Sendzik announced joint funding for four local infrastructure projects.

The Bogart Street Park in St. Catharines will be one of the beneficiaries, and money will be used to renovate the tennis courts into a multi-use court for basketball, tennis and pickleball. As well, the playground will be renovated to improve accessibility.

In Pelham, funding will support the rehabilitation of Marlene Stewart Streit Park. The money will cover several costs including replacing the outdoor pool, a new splash pad and picnic pavilion, and accessibility improvements to the pool, playground and other areas.

As well, upgrades will be made to the sports fields, tennis courts, washrooms and fencing at the Wainfleet Community Complex, and the Play Space Resurfacing Project in Lincoln will get funds for more recreation spaces in the community.

Bittle says the investment is great news for the region.

"Ensuring residents have access to recreational infrastructure is vital for community well-being and development. Today’s investment for four recreation, community, and cultural projects in the Niagara Region will provide residents with access to modern, reliable, and accessible recreation infrastructure where they can connect and maintain active and healthy lifestyles. Canada’s infrastructure plan invests in thousands of projects, creates jobs across the country, and builds cleaner, more inclusive communities."

The Ontario government is investing over $2 million, and the rest is coming from the federal government.
