Dr. Hirji Calling for More Health Care Staff in Ontario

Niagara's top doctor says more hospital staff will help ease pressures on health care system.

Niagara's acting medical officer of health is avoiding what he calls the political discussion around Canada's never-ending health care problems.

After recent meetings in Vancouver failed between the federal and provincial governments, Dr. Mustafa Hirji said he thinks more health care staff is needed.

"I don't think there's going to be an easy fix to this.  I think a lot of what the province wants is more money. More money would be great, but I don't think that's going to magically solve the problem.  What we need are more staff in the health care system."

He also says it's important to do your part to reduce the spread of infectious diseases this winter season.

Hirji is advising residents to wash their hands frequently and stay up to date on their vaccinations.
