The Trudeau government has signed a tentative deal to produce COVID-19 vaccinations in Montreal.
During a press conference today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that the government has reached a deal with Novavax to produce millions of doses its COVID-19 vaccine.
Before this happens, the drug needs to be approved by Health Canada, and construction of the National Research Council facility needs to be completed.
The operation could result in Novavax vaccines being produced in Canada in the fall, making Canadians less reliant on shipments of doses coming in from Europe.
A deal is being crafted by the Trudeau government to bring COVID-19 vaccine production to Canadian soil.
Instead of being entirely reliant on foreign production, Industry Minister Francois-Phillipe Champagne says they are close to a deal that will bring leading vaccine manufacturers here for production.
The need for a domestic facility was highlighted recently, after Europe announced export controls on vaccines, putting at risk Canada's entire supply of COVID-19 vaccines.
