CUPE Strike Votes Set For End of September

CUPE says they won't be in a position to strike until at least October.

The union representing education staff such as maintenance workers, librarians and early childhood educators in Ontario has set a strike vote.

CUPE says voting on whether to set a strike mandate will take place September 23rd to October 2nd.

This means workers won't be in a legal position to walk off the job until at least October.

The union is asking for an annual wage bump of 11.7 percent

Laura Walton, President of CUPE's Ontario School Board of Unions, says holding the vote doesn't necessarily mean workers will withdraw services, but will show the government they are prepared to fight.

Meanwhile, Education Minister Stephen Lecce says the union is making "unreasonable demands."
