City of Welland Reminding Residents Not to Drive Vehicles Like ATVs in Parks and Trails

Fines to be issued against anyone caught violating the bylaw.

The City of Welland is asking residents not to drive motorized vehicles while enjoying public parks and trails.

Officials say trails and parks are meant for passive use, and vehicles like ATVs can be dangerous to people on foot.

"Use of motorized vehicles in our parks and on our trails creates a safety risk for everyone," said Rob Axiak, director of community services. "Our parks and trails are critical pieces of social infrastructure, and motorized vehicles cause damage to the landscape. The City will not tolerate the sense of unease motorized vehicles create on trails for the rest of the community."

The by-law applies to the following types of vehicles: automobile, motorcycle, motor-assisted bicycle, scooter, trail bike, dune buggy, mini-bike, go-cart, trailer, traction engine, farm tractor, all-terrain vehicle (ATV), motorized snow vehicle, and any other vehicle drawn, propelled, or driven by a power whatsoever.

Anyone caught violating the bylaw will be fined $500 for the first offence, and $1,000 for subsequent violations.

Anyone who would like to report a concern is asked to call Niagara Regional Police.
