City of Welland Encouraging Residents to Reduce Litter

City will participate in the Provincial Day of Action on Litter on May 10th.

The City of Welland is encouraging residents to do their part to help keep the community clean.

On May 10th, the City will participate in the Provincial Day of Action on Litter.

As well, residents are encouraged to keep an eye on the amount of waste being brought to landfills and prevent litter from entering the environment.

Officials say debris entering waterways can break down into micro-plastics, which can cause damage to wildlife and ecosystems.

"Our City is fortunate to have a body of water in the recreational canal that provides a safe, clean source of drinking water and serves as a place to be active and enjoy the outdoors," said Rob Axiak, director of community services. "As a community, we can work together to prevent the entry of unnecessary garbage or refuse into an important feature in our City."

Anyone who wants to participate in the 2022 Provincial Day of Action on Litter can volunteer to clean up Welland's parks, streets and neighbourhoods.

All participants should wear highly visible clothing or vests, and protective clothing, footwear and gloves.
