City of St. Catharines Gets Ownership of Port Dalhousie Piers

Council supports move to transfer ownership of the Port Dalhousie Piers and harbour lands.

The City of St. Catharines now owns the Port Dalhousie Piers.

At Monday's council meeting, councillors voted in favour of transferring ownership of the Port Dalhousie Piers and harbour lands, including Lakeside Park.

Since 1992, the City has leased the piers and harbour lands from the Ministry of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard.

The City sub-leases parts of the lands to several sub-tenants, including the St. Catharines Fish and Game Club, the Dalhousie Yacht Club and the Port Dalhousie Pier Marina.

This will continue following the transfer.

"The transfer of the Port Dalhousie Piers and harbour lands to the City will ensure this important historical landmark will continue to make St. Catharines a waterfront destination for residents and visitors alike," said Chief Administrative Officer David Oakes.

In 2021, the piers and harbour underwent a $28 million rehabilitation, and the Port Dalhousie Piers reopened to the public.

St. Catharines Mayor Walter Sendzik says the City will ensure lakeside assets are properly maintained.
