City of St. Catharines Asking Province to Increase Funding for Affordable Housing in Niagara

Council will send letter to the Ford government, asking for more funding to help Niagara Regional Housing

The City of St. Catharines is encouraging the province to invest in social housing in Niagara.

Last night, council unanimously agreed to write to the Ford government, asking for more funding for Niagara Regional Housing in order to address long waitlists for affordable housing.

This comes after the province asked the city to commit to building 11,000 homes by 2031.

Councillor  Greg Miller says while the city agreed, more needs to be done to solve the housing crisis.

"It’s pretty clear that the city alone, even the city and region alone, isn’t going to be able to solve the housing crisis. We do need a commitment, and a specific commitment as I’ve asked for here in this motion, from the province towards ending wait times for social housing and doing more to build affordable housing."

The letter asks for the province to make the pledge by September 30th.

The funding would be put towards more affordable housing in the region.

At the moment, about 9,000 households are waiting for affordable housing in Niagara.
