Port Cares officials say that one in four Port Colborne residents are at risk of homelessness.
At last night's virtual public meeting, council met with representatives from Port Cares and the community to discuss the issue.
Port Cares Executive Director Christine Clark Lafleur noted that the situation is particularly bad for seniors.
"One in four residents is at risk of homelessness because they are spending more than 30 per cent of their net income on housing. And of the one in four at risk of homelessness, 50 per cent are over the age 55. Seniors are at a higher risk of experiencing homelessness due to marital or relationship separation, illness, cost of medications and job loss."
Last year, the City decided to donate Chestnut Park to Port Cares for the purpose of building affordable housing units.
Residents at the meeting expressed concerns about the location of the units and the removal of Chestnut Park.
The City said that they will relocate the playground equipment at Chestnut Park to Lockview Park.
The City announced that they will seek public consultation from residents this spring on how to best modernize Lockview Park, as well as other parks in the area.
City staff will be compiling a list of questions and answers on the issue, which will be published online by March 2nd.
