City Council Approves Habitat for Humanity Townhouse Complex in Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls City Council has approved another Habitat for Humanity build.

Habitat Niagara CEO Mark Carl says 16 townhouses will be built in the Adams Ave and Hawkins Street area, behind Oakwood Gospel Hall.

"It is our biggest development. Because of the cost of land, we have to now start looking at innovative ways. Instead of a single family house on one lot, we now have to look at building townhouses and maximizing the property to make it more affordable."

The project was originally supposed to include 18 affordable homes, but residents raised concerns about traffic, water and sewer during a public meeting back in August.

Council decided to defer the project and Carl says they went back to the drawing board.

"We removed two units to make it less dense, to give a safer walkway and move the road over from the residents a little bit. We're happy that it got approved so we can serve 16 families."

Carl would like to have shovels in the ground in late 2020 or early 2021 and it should take about 2.5 years to build.
