Chair of Niagara Catholic to Appeal Ban Decided by Trustees

The chair of the Niagara Catholic District School Board plan to appeal the decision to ban him from meetings for the next six months.

As reported by the St. Catharines Standard, earlier this month, colleagues voted to ban chair Larry Huibers from meetings after he took a trip to the Caribbean in January.

Huibers says an appeal is "imminent", and if trustees don't budge, he has the option of requesting a judicial review.

Between January 3rd and January 9th, Huibers was in St. Maarten conducting what he claimed to be "essential work."

The work involved a vessel belonging to a sailing club he has been a part of for several years, and he says that no one else could have made the trip for him.

While both the board and federal government advised against non-essential travel, a third party investigation into his conduct determined he didn't break any rules.

On December 15th, superintendent of human resources Pat Rocca sent Niagara Catholic staff a memo, discouraging them from international travel except in cases of emergency.

The memo also stated that those who do travel to another country are expected to self isolate for two weeks upon return.
