Certain Hospital Parking Fees Targeted

Niagara Falls MPP says families of children battling cancer shouldn't be paying to park

The grim financial burden faced by families of children with cancer brought to the Ontario legislature.

Niagara Falls MPP Wayne Gates is asking the government get rid of parking fees at hospitals for families fighting cancer with their kids.

He's met with Niagara families, who've told him of endless hospital visits.  "We're talking about months, maybe years or longer, for daily hospital visits for their family.  When the costs add up, they're staggering.  Thousands and thousands of dollars.  I've talked to the parents in my community who've had to go in debt, and take out a 2nd mortgage."

He praised the group Ontario Parents Advocating for Children with Cancer.  "The amazing people at OPACC fundraise to reimburse families for some of the costs, but, let's be clear.... hospital parking isn't something any family with a child diagnosed with cancer should be worrying about."

This isn't the first time he has asked the government about dealing with hospital parking for patients, families and visitors.
