Canadian Transportation Agency Reporting Backlog of Air Passenger Complaints

Canadians looking for compensation for flight delays could be waiting for about a year.

Canadian air travelers seeking refunds for flight delays, cancellations and misplaced luggage will have to wait longer to get their money back.

Tom Oommen of the Canadian Transportation Agency says the organization is dealing with a large backlog of customer complaints as it looks to hire more facilitators to help resolve disputes.

The complaint backlog rose to over 15,300 in May with further increases in June, as the number of air travelers surged following two years of little demand.

Oommen says it usually takes about 19 days to resolve a dispute once it reaches a facilitator, but currently it's about a year before a file arrives on their desk.

He also notes most cases are from customers seeking refunds for flight delays and cancellations, as well as misplaced luggage.
