Canadian Blood Services Battling Critically Low Supply

Agency says the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in the smallest donor base in a decade.

Canadian Blood Services is asking new and returning blood donors to help replenish a critically low supply.

Spokesperson Rick Prinzen says since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020, the number of Canadians who regularly donate has dropped by 31,000, resulting in the smallest donor base in a decade.

He also notes only about 400,000 Canadians donate blood on a regular basis.

This week is National Blood Donor Week, and Canadian Blood Services is looking to attract 100,000 new donors this year.

Summer is usually a slow time for donations, as people cancel appointments or go on vacation.
