Canada's Freeze on Buying, Selling Handguns Takes Effect

Canada's Public Safety Minister says handgun freeze takes effect today.

The federal government's plan to freeze the number of handguns in Canada has taken effect.

In a tweet, Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino made the announcement, saying it's now illegal to buy, sell or transfer a handgun anywhere in Canada.

In May, the Liberal government announced plans to freeze importing, buying, selling or transferring handguns, in order to reduce violent crime.

However, Parliament has yet to approve accompanying legislative measures.

The legislation would allow sport shooters to continue purchasing handguns.

The government is also facing pressure to expand the legislation to include a wider range of recreational shooters.
