Canada Summer Games Promises To Be Historic Event For Niagara

Eighteen different sports will be featured during Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games.

The Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games is about ten months away, but is already shaping up to leave a lasting impact in the region.

Board Chair Doug Hamilton tells us the Games will be a once in a lifetime event for Niagara.

"This is a once ever opportunity, and we've got a very aggressive vision to inspire, transform and unify, and it will be an important event."

The Games, which will be in Niagara from August 6th - 21st next year, are held on a rotation through different communities across the country.

This will be the third time in more than 50 years the event is coming to Ontario.

Hamilton says spectators will be allowed to watch sporting events, within COVID protocols, and 18 different sports will be featured, including box lacrosse.

"We're actually very excited to include box lacrosse in our Canada Games. It's the first time they've been in the Canada Games in 30 or 40 years."

Niagara will also see a lasting legacy from the Games, with the building of Canada Games Park and the Henley Rowing Centre.

Hamilton also says a legacy organization will be created, with the intention of a legacy fund being created to help develop more programs and events.

As well, organizers are also seeking 4,500 volunteers to help out in a variety of roles.
