Two statues will be built at Lakeside Park in St. Catharines.

Rush fans will soon have a place to celebrate the legacy of drummer Neil Peart.

The City of St. Catharines' Neil Peart Commemorative Task Force has chosen an artist to create a memorial to Peart.

The memorial will be built alongside the Neil Peart Pavilion in Lakeside Park, the place that inspired Peart to write the song "Lakeside Park" for Rush.

Dave DeRocco, the chair of the task force, says the memorial will attract Rush fans from across the globe.

"We are convinced that this will become an international tourist destination in the same way that Jimi Hendrix's final resting place is or Jim Morrison or Abbey Road. Fans of Rush will flock to Lakeside Park."

The task force has selected artist Morgan MacDonald of the Newfoundland Bronze Foundry for the project.

The concept includes two bronze statues of Peart, one of him as a young poet holding a book and drumsticks, and one of him in his later years, holding a piece of his drum kit and offering drumsticks to fans.

DeRocco says there will be several intricate features, including some of his old cymbals incorporated into the work.

He notes that it was important to select a piece that honoured Neil as a person as well as his contribution to music.

"All through this whole process, we've been looking to honour Neil, not just the musician, but also Neil the poet, Neil the author, the writer, the philanthropist."

The project is contingent on the task force raising $1 million.
