The Alarmed for Life program will be a bit different this year.

St. Catharines firefighters will be going door to door on weekday evenings and weekend afternoons to educate residents about fire safety.

But they won't be able to enter homes to inspect smoke and carbon monoxide alarms due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fire Chief Jeff McCormick says unattended cooking, discarded smoker's materials and electrical fires are the leading causes of home fires in the Garden City.

"With residents spending more time at home, it is more important than ever to provide the proper resources and educational materials on home and fire safety."

The program starts tonight and it runs all summer until Monday, September 14th.
