Niagara Health calls it a difficult but necessary decision... to eliminate 98 positions, in order to tackle a $26-million deficit.
The organization says, as with all Ontario hospitals, pressures are significant, with patient needs growing, while they use resources responsibly.
Niagara Health is adjusting some operations, which includes eliminating roles created during COVID that are no longer needed, but, offering those people work in other areas.
In fact, 87% of the 98 people losing jobs will be reassigned.
Niagara Health adds there won't be any nurses fired, and, recruitment will continue in areas of high demand.
These changes will result in more than $9-million in savings.
Niagara Health has already renewed contracts, improved sick time and overtime, reduced spending, while strengthening emergency department and in-patient performance.
