The City of Welland is asking people not to feed ducks, birds, geese, gulls or swans.
A plan has been initiated by the City and Municipal Wildlife Services to maintain a healthy balance between geese and people along the Welland Recreation Corridor.
Residents are reminded that bird feces can contain bacteria harmful to humans.
Feeding can attract other birds as well, resulting in increased droppings in grass, sand and water.
In addition, birds can get sick from eating scraps, and feeding them may encourage them to stay here longer instead of migrating to the south in the winter to find other sources of food.
Currently, the City is undertaking several measures to control the geese population, including dog patrol, pyrotechnics, relocation services and avian distress calls.
