City receives numerous complaints about drivers speeding through intersections while guards help children on the way to school.
Welland crossing guards are adopting a new approach in order to help kids on their way to class.
The City says several complaints have been filed about drivers speeding through school crosswalks.
All crossing guards have been given Windsor sports whistles designed to get the attention of motorists at the touch of a button.
One blast will be made to alert drivers when guards determine it's safe to enter the crosswalk, and two whistles will sound off to let pedestrians know they can cross the street.
"All crossing guards are wearing masks to help keep those around them safe, but in doing so, they can reduce the quality and clarity of verbal communication which we are used to relying on," said Jolene Kostick, workplace health, safety, and wellness specialist. "We brought in the whistles to provide additional audible control to assist the crossing guards to carry out their high-risk tasks."
Under the Highway Traffic Act, school crossing guards must stop traffic movement in order to help kids safely get to class.
