Nate Erskine-Smith, the Liberal MP for the Beaches-East York riding, has launched a bid to become the next leader of the Ontario Liberal Party.

TORONTO - A Toronto-area MP is looking to become the next leader of Ontario's Liberal Party.

Nate Erskine-Smith is the first candidate to put their name forward for the leadership race. He was first elected in the riding of Beaches-East York back in 2015 and he has been re-elected at the federal level three times since then.

He says he wants to rebuild the party and plans to focus on access to health care, senior care, mental health and addictions, climate change, and wealth inequality.

Members of the Ontario Liberal Party will select their next leader through a ranked ballot on November 25th and 26th. The new leader will be announced on December 2nd.

Steven Del Duca stepped down as the leader of the Ontario Liberal Party after the provincial election last year. The Liberals failed to win enough seats in the legislature to achieve official party status. Del Duca is now serving as the Mayor of Vaughn.
