Today Niagara Goes Grey

Today is the day Niagara heads back into the province’s colour coded framework.

The region is the only area of Ontario entering the framework today in the grey coloured category.

That means retail stores can begin opening again but at 25 percent capacity, grocery stores that are already open will see their capacity expanded to 50 percent.

Hair salons, barber shops and personal care businesses will remain closed and restaurants can only offer take out options.

26 other public health units also return to the colour coded framework today, many like Hamilton will fall into the red category which allows for limited in person dining at restaurants.

And it was a weekend of pleas for calm from local politicians, the Premier and even the Prime Minister after Niagara’s Acting Medical Officer of Health became the subject of online threats for the decision to move us into the restrictive grey category.

Dr. Hirji took to Twitter over the long weekend to welcome the outpouring of support including the #WeStandWithDrHirji tag.

The doctor writing “I’m gratified so many are speaking up against violent language, such discourse corrodes our unity.”

A spokesperson for the public health unit explaining in an email  “Dr. Hirji agrees with the consensus of public health experts that reopening the economy too quickly right now risks a devastating third wave and third lockdown which could do even more harm to Niagara residents and business owners.”

Niagara Regional Police are investigating the threats made against the doctor.
